Success!

I finished my first pair of hand knit socks. Woohoo!

My friend has also started knitting socks, after being introduced to the magic loop method. I haven’t tried it, yet. I’m still mastering socks on DPNs.

Some people don’t see the point of knitting socks, making something that no one else will see most of the time, though there are clear clogs to show them off if you’re so inclined. While Brandon is impressed with my knitting skills, and is interested in having hand knit socks, he wouldn’t be caught dead in mine. They

  • are too bright
  • have stripes
  • don’t match

For me, that’s the point. Or rather, the point is that they feel good on my feet, and I made them. Who cares if the stripes aren’t exactly in the same order?

My husband, like many men (if the comments on Ravelry are any indication), would prefer something a little less wild. No bright colors, no stripes, and matching. And no lacy patterns (translation: nothing “girly”). So he took me out to the Yarn Barn last week to pick out some sedate, manly sock yarn.

Lucky for me, the Yarn Harlot posted a pattern for a pair of socks that she made for her husband, who happens to like the same kind of socks. But she’s a knitter, who understands that plain sock yarn + stockinette sock = coma, so the pattern has a little, elegant, cable detail up the side. Just enough to break up the monotony and keep a knitter conscious.
